Ships Safe and Fast.Tim O'Driscoll became well known in Australia, as well as internationally, for his experimental work on rock deformation; his meticulous plotting of lineaments, associated fracture patterns, and ring structures; and his application of both lines of research to the practical problems of locating mineral deposits. His work led to significant advances in Australia's Broken Hill and Kambalda mineral fields, but he will be remembered particularly as a member of the distinguished Western Mining Corporation team that discovered and planned the early development of the world-class Olympic Dam ore body in Australia. His work has inspired many colleagues in the industry to apply, extend, and refine his findings. O'Driscoll had intended to present his life's work in book form, but this wish was overtaken by events. Instead, he helped plan this volume, which includes and is built around, what are regarded as his benchmark papers. They are interspersed with invited essays authored by friends and colleagues which offer background and perspective to his own seminal contributions. This memorial volume is a timely reminder not only of the significance of Tim O'Driscoll's varied contributions to mineral exploration, but also of his warm and generous friendship.; B&W Illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 208 pages

Pages are clean and not marred by notes or folds. Covers are square with minor wear. Ships Safe and Fast. Published without Dust Jacket (? ). Few knowledgeable people would deny that the field of mineral exploration is facing some difficult times in the foreseeable future. Among the woes, we can cite a worldwide economic uneasiness reflected by sluggish and at times widely fluctuating metal prices, global financial uncertainties, and relentless pressures on costs despite a substantial slowing down of the rate of inflation. Furthermore, management is forced to tum to more sophisticated and expensive technologies and to look farther afield to more remote regions, as the better quality and more easily accessible ore deposits have now been revealed. This rather gloomy outlook should persuade explorationists to cast about for a new philosophy with which to guide mineral exploration through the challenging decades ahead. Once already, in the early 1960s, a call for change had been heard (Ref. 30 in Chapter 1), when it became obvious that the prospecting methods of yesteryear, so successful in the past, could not keep up with the rapidly growing demand for minerals of the postwar period. The answer, a massive introduction of sophisticated geophysical and geochemical technologies backed by new geo logical models, proved spectacularly successful throughout the 1960s and the 1970s. But for both economic and technological reasons, the brisk pace of the last two decades has considerably slowed down in the early 1980s, as if a new threshold has been reached.; 10.10 X 6.90 X 1.40 inches; 380 pages
