3 Agricola, Georgius; Hoover, Herbert Clark; Hoover, Henry Lou (translators) De Re Metallica Translated from the First Latin Edition of 1556 with Biographical Introduction, Annotations, and Appendices...
New York Dover 1950 First Edition Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Unmarked, mild wear on corners. ; Book Description; Spine has no signs of creasing. Pages are clean and not marred by notes or folds. Covers are square and with minor wearOriginally published in 1556, Agricola's De ReM etallica was the first book on mining to be based on field research and observation what today would be called the "scientific approach." It was therefore the first book to offer detailed technical drawings to illustrate the various specialized techniques of the many branches of mining, and the first to provide a realistic history of mining from antiquity to the mid-sixteenth century. For almost 200 years, Agricola remained the only authoritative work in this area and by modern times it had become one of the most highly respected scientific classics of all time. A book more often referred to in literature on mining and metallurgy than any other, its Latin text prevented it from being as widely used as it might have been. In 1912, the book was translated by former President Herbert Clark Hoover and his wife. Printed in a limited edition, the work was quickly bought up by book collectors, historians, and medievalists, who had found that there was much to be learned from its pages. The book contains an unprecedented wealth of material on alluvial mining, alchemy, silver refining, smelting, surveying, timbering, nitric acid making, and hundreds of other phases of the medieval art of metallurgy. The text even covers the legal aspects of mining the use of boundary stones, forfeitures of titles, safety requirements of tunnel building in the 1500s, and so on.; Woodcuts; 10.90 X 7.10 X 2.20 inches; 638 pages

20 Berton, Pierre The Klondike Fever The Life and Death of the Last Great Gold Rush
New York Basic Books 2003 0786713178 / 9780786713172 Later Printing Softcover Very Good
Unmarked. Mild wear on some corners. ; Book Description; Spine has no signs of creasing. Pages are clean and not marred by notes or folds. Covers are square with minor wear. Ships Safe and Fast. In 1897 a grimy steamer docked in Seattle and set into epic motion the incredible succession of events that Pierre Berton's exhilarating The Klondike Fever chronicles in all its splendid and astonishing folly. For the steamer Portland bore two tons of pure Klondike gold. And immediately, the stampede north to Alaska began. Easily as many as 100,000 adventurers, dreamers, and would-be miners from all over the world struck out for the remote, isolated gold fields in the Klondike Valley, most of them in total ignorance of the long, harsh Alaskan winters and the territory's indomitable terrain. Less than a third of that number would complete the enormously arduous mountain journey to their destination. Some would strike gold. Berton's story belongs less to the few who would make their fortunes than to the many swept up in the gold mania, to often unfortunate effects and tragic ends. It is a story of cold skies and avalanches, of con men and gamblers and dance hall girls, of sunken ships, of suicides, of dead horses and desperate men, of grizzly old miners and millionaires, of the land its exploitation and revenge. It is a story of the human capacity to dream, and to endure. ; B&W Illustrations; 8.20 X 5.50 X 1.12 inches; 494 pages
